Four Worlds of the Qabalah and Dream Symbology
by Neven Paar
Many Spiritual people have a habit of being preoccupied with their dreams and visions, spending a great deal of time and energy trying to interpret what they saw. In the long run, this process entangles their minds and destabilizes them mentally. But why do Spiritual people make this mistake in the first place? I believe it comes from an erroneous belief imposed on by movies and television that all visions must have some validity to them. After all, it's empowering to think you are a psychic who can predict the future.
In 99% of cases, if a person dreams of a natural event, such as a tornado or tsunami, this in no way means that their dream is going to become a reality somewhere in the world. Thinking so is an absolute waste of time that ensnares one in illusion and leads them astray from the Spiritual path. There is something else going on within the Subtle Planes though that requires examination. Once properly understood, it will shed light on the process of psychism.
Hermetic belief is that every human being is a Microcosm of the Macrocosm. In other words, every human being is the centre of their Universe with its own Solar System, that powers their energy field, their Aura. Because we have all have different past conditioning, and we were brought up in different environments, every individual's imagination is different, but the formula stays the same.
If the energy of St. Michael is present in a room of four people, it is highly unlikely that everyone will see him. Some will even see a her. A person with a Christian background may see an Angel of Fire; a Hindu may see Shiva or another of the Fire Gods. Another person may see the Voodoo Deity Shango. A third person may even see the blazing torch held in the Olympics or a fireball from the sky. And the list goes on with many different interpretations of the same energy. We all experience this cultural and religious bias.
People get too caught up in their meditative or dream visions—the things they see through their Mind's Eye when the Ego is silenced. Afterwards, they spend time defending what they saw with their Ego.
Most of the time, we see the same thing, but our Egos fail to realize it, so we end up fighting and defending our positions as if they are sacred because it's what we saw. In reality, we feel and experience the same thing, but we don't see it the same way. Instead of focusing on the contents of a vision or a dream, you must learn to decipher the archetypal energy that created the content. In its essence lies the truth of what the image is trying to convey. Let me explain how this works.
The Holy Qabalah states that there are Four Worlds. The First World is called Atziluth; the Archetypal World or World of Pure Spirit that activates the following three Worlds. In other words, the lower Worlds evolve from it.
Atziluth—because it is Pure Spirit beyond time, beyond space, and in essence beyond manifestation—is beyond description. Some Qabalists use the term Atziluth as the Divine World or the World where the Thoughts of God exist—the World of the Primal Fire. The necessary inference from this World is that the Thought of God as archetypal energy is something all humans agree on.
Atziluth is beyond time and space—the first thing that filters through us when we relate to the physical world and look outwards. A banana is a banana and not a car. A tree is a tree, not a house. Whoever does not agree with the Archetypes in nature is labelled insane and put into a mental institution. The perception of archetypal energy though depends on the lower Worlds that it filters through.
The second World is Briah, known as the Creative World. This is the World of Primal Water and pure intellect. As the Fire and Water Elements represent Soul and consciousness, they work in conjunction with one another to create ideas. Primal Fire sends a thought impulse into Primal Water, thereby forming an intuitional thought. It is not a visual thought just yet, but it has been received by the consciousness and manifested as a quantifiable essence.
Although this intuitional thought has not been given its form just yet, it is more of an impulse, something we can feel in the deepest parts of our Being. We experience this intuitional thought through the capacity of our hearts to generate unconditional love energy. Hence, the more unconditional love energy a person carries in their heart, the higher they are elevated Spiritually. They are considered as empaths or telepaths, who perceive reality mainly through their intuition. The consciousness of these people resides in the World of Briah and is the highest conception of God we can experience. Atziluth cannot be experienced since it is pure Force, the Holy Fire, which needs Briah to register its Form to create an idea. Human beings experience forms through the Mind's Eye, as intuition is the highest of our senses and one that partakes of the Spirit energy. Our intuition is the absorbing part of the Self that receives from the World above it, Atziluth. It conveys truth to us.
As our intuition allows us to agree on archetypal energy, once we start to break down these symbols intellectually with our Egos, we filter down into the Lower two Worlds. As such, the Light that shines from above starts to be tempered by illusion—the reflection of the truth. This process allows past conditioning to come into play where the archetype we are experiencing starts to get its visual form, and we begin to see glimpses of it as a visual picture.
The third World responsible for visual images is called Yetzirah, the World of Formation. This Astral World of Primal Air is where the subtle and flashing patterns behind physical matter are found. In this World, because it is the Air Element, the Ego starts to get involved as it does in all Air operations. Air is a lower manifestation of Spirit, which moves and breathes life into the Water and Fire Elements. They cannot exist without Air as the medium of expression.
Creation depends on the operation of the three Elements of Air, Fire, and Water. They work with each other and are a cohesive whole. Air is the firmament that holds the other two Elements in balance. Without Air, there is no life. And because of the Air Element, we feel and see the Astral World. The Fire and Water Elements created this World, but we see it with the Mind's Eye because of Air, through our imagination.
In terms of dream symbolism, it is at this point that we start to see differences in our visions, even though they may be the same archetype or subject matter. But since that which we experience and see is real to us, we use our Egos to defend our reality, often failing to see that we are talking about the same thing. This is the essence of the St. Michael parable cited above.
The Fourth and final World is Assiah, which is the active World, or the physical World of sensation, including both seen and unseen energies of matter. Assiah is the physical World that we all take part in and experience with the five senses of touch, taste, smell, sound, and sight. The three other Worlds above are all experienced through the sixth sense, Ajna Chakra, and are the main subject of study for us at the present moment.
For one to rise in consciousness, they must lift the Veil of Illusion and allow their True Self to overcome the Ego. This process is the essence of Spiritual Evolution which involves the purification of Karma and eradication of the Ego. Since Karma accumulates as a result of the Ego's growth, to be born again in the Spirit, one must shed the Ego.
As you see now, psychic visions are most often a product of the imagination, which is a product of energy being present in the system, the Aura. Dreams are the same thing. As the energy manifests itself in the Aura, it needs to filter through the Four Worlds in order to leave the Aura, otherwise it remains lodged there. Human consciousness has to enter into an Alpha state to achieve this.
It can be accomplished through meditation or, more commonly, during dream states. Someone who does Ritual Magick or other types of energy invocations, can bring in the desired energy into their Aura. This energy would affect their consciousness throughout the day until the person meditates, which is when these visions take place, and the energy takes a visual form. Then, when they go to sleep, their dreams are influenced by this energy.
"As Above, So Below" is a Hermetic axiom that explains the correspondence between the different Planes of existence, or Worlds. As one thing is happening in one Plane, it affects the manifestation in other Planes. Plane and World are the same thing, in essence. Everything that is pure energy has to filter through the Four Worlds to take effect.
Energy is invoked in the World of Briah by using the power of the World of Atziluth. But to manifest itself, it has to go through the World of Formation, or Yetzirah, where it can be experienced as a vision, dream, or inspired thought. I say inspired thought since this thought is not created by the Ego, but by energy outside the Self. It is a direct thought from the True or Higher Self which resides in the Primal Fire, or Atziluth.
Someone who is in touch with the World of Atziluth and Briah on a continual basis throughout the day will have very a strong intuition and may receive prophetic ideas or premonitions because they see what is going to happen before it filters down through the two lower Worlds. But to be completely attuned to these Worlds, one has to be highly evolved.
However, those adepts are rare because to be attuned to the first two Worlds in modern-day society; you have to be void of Ego and its impulses unless you are in a constant state of meditation which is nearly impossible.
People with an awakened Kundalini that is permanently in the brain will be in touch with Primal Fire and Primal Water substantially more than someone who hasn’t awakened Kundalini. As they transform with this energy, they will begin to be affected very little by their Ego and workings of the lower two Worlds. A permanent Kundalini awakening produces a complete numbing down of the physical body so that the consciousness is not aware of it, but is lost in itself. By seeing themselves from a third-person perspective, outside of their own body, they will see the Ego for what it truly is—an illusion.
This permanent out-of-body experience of life is one of the gradual steps of the Kundalini awakening. It may take many years to reach this high level of Spiritual Evolution, but it is part of the process. To altogether leave the body and become one with Cosmic Consciousness is the next step in our Spiritual Evolution. It involves the complete liberation of Soul and consciousness from the physical body and absorption into the Universal Whole.
In reality, every human being is a spark of Light from the Sun localized in a physical body for the duration of time that we are alive on Planet Earth. Our level of consciousness is determined by how much Light channels through our Chakras. Our true essence then is Light and consciousness. Let those with ears of understanding comprehend this great truth of our existence. Through it, one can experience the full breaking down of the Ego. Its essence is the cornerstone of all religion and life philosophy.
For most people, these words you are reading will not make it past the second World of Yetzirah because wisdom and understanding take place in the first two Worlds of Atziluth and Briah. For wisdom to exist, there has to be understanding, and vice versa.
In conclusion, people need not waste time trying to interpret their visions. If they see something outside of the realm of their Ego or something they unconsciously thought up, they need to dismiss it and not regard it as some prophetic vision or premonition. In most cases, it is simply something that filtered through the inner Cosmic Planes, an energy that came into the Aura to be seen and experienced and nothing more.
The Ego does not need to interpret a vision for it to have made an impact on the consciousness. If this vision filtered through a person's imagination, it did what it was intended, which is enter into their Aura and send them a message. The message was received in the higher Worlds and has already made an impact on Soul and consciousness.
Spiritual Rebirth is a process of forgetting, of eradicating old memories. Its purpose is to erase the memories that the Ego uses to identify itself. by doing so, the person stops relating through past conditioning, and they begin to function on intuition. As such, they enter the Now, the present moment—a place of no-thought. Hence, complicating your lives by trying to interpret visions is working against you. Stay in no-thought, and ride the wave of Pure Consciousness. This is the message of the Masters.
